FAQs
how do you stay inspired?
I’ll speak for myself on this one, but I’ve always been a firm believer that being— or rather, feeling inspired is not something one can typically choose to be. It comes to you, uninvited, but thoroughly welcomed, with a complete mind of its own. Sometimes enveloping your every thought, building and building until the swell breaks, and the ideas are exhausted, other times it’s an instant, a glimpse of a smile, a smell, and flash of a memory that once was. My advice is not how to stay inspired, but rather to accept inspiration as it comes, and to remind yourself to give it the gratitude it deserves.
How did you two meet?
Short answer: We met on a train, and were married within four weeks.
Why did you decide to leave land for a floating home?
To start, we both adore the ocean. Dave grew up in southern Texas, fishing and surfing the Gulf coast. Sam spent a healthy part of the year in western Florida with her grandparents at the beach, jumping waves and collecting shark teeth until dark. To continue, we’ve both tended to live untraditional lives. Dave is a musician and has lived a good chunk of his life on the road, exploring, and playing shows, and Sam chased love to and fro while building a business at age 21 merely so that she could write and travel well throughout her twenties. You could say it’s in our blood, the seeking of endless adventures and the pushing of ultimate limits. Given the above, life on a boat seems to be a very suitable next step.
Why did you start blogging?
Sam has always been a writer. She studied art in school, but spent more time in the library reading books and more evenings with her laptop in bed writing about the woes of being a freshman in college. As we progress into this new phase of our lives, we want to document as much as possible. Blogging seems to be a simple solution to both puzzles.
What blogs do you read?
Dave is more of a lay-in-his-underwear-watching-youtube kind of guy
Here are a few of Sam’s favourites:
-> Joy from Joy the baker
-> Johnie from Dirtbag Darling
-> James from The Bleu
-> Chalkboard magazine
-> Furthermore by Equinox
What’s your advice to beginning bloggers?
Writer’s block is alive and well. Try to find purpose in what it is you are writing about. If you love food, write about that new pancake recipe you’ve been dabbling with, if you love photography, try writing about what you see when you look at your captures. There are endless stories waiting to be told. Don’t be afraid to share yours.
What are you favorite travel resources/inspirations?
It doesn’t take much to get us excited about travel. As for resources, word of mouth seems to top the list. Followed by a healthy binge of Youtube videos, and travel books.
Are you going to have children?
Dave has two beautiful children already. Sam loves children and puppies in equal measures. As for the future? We will have to wait and see.
Are you two Spiritual?
Yes. We will be writing a post about this very soon. Stay tuned!
How do you maintain balance between mental health and working?
Full disclosure: It’s not easy. Our best advice? Go easy on yourself. Life comes with waves of sacrifice, however choosing to keep your mind happy and healthy as best you can is something we could all benefit from.
For us that means: that extra hour of morning slumber, long walks to ward off frustrations, attending meetings, together and apart, unplanned day trips, phone calls to friends afar, journaling, reading, laughing till our bellies hurt, heck even a bag of blue corn chips and hummus in bed.
Why are you pursuing an awareness campaign towards climate change?
To be quite frank, we want more. As excited as we are to trade in our highway views for open seas, finding purpose in what we do far exceeds the day to day pleasures living on a boat can bring. Using our platform to bring awareness to the causes we hold close helps give what we are doing substance. Doing our part to help the planet that has given us so much is the very least we could do.
